Trebouxia is a unicellular green alga. It is a photosynthetic organism that can exist in almost all habitats found in polar, tropical, and temperate regions. It can either exist in a symbiotic relationship with fungi in the form of lichen or it can survive independently as a free-living organism alone or in colonies.

Trebouxia is the most common photobiont in extant : Trebouxiophyceae. Trebouxia appears to be closely related to the free-living genus, Pleurastrum, which makes the treatment by van den Hoek et al. correct. The current concept of the genus is that of a unicellular, usually spherical alga, containing a single, large stellate chloroplast ('star-like'), which itself contains a single, central pyrenoid.

Other articles where Trebouxia is discussed: fungus: Basic features of lichens: lichen associations contain species of Trebouxia, a single-celled green alga.

There are about 15 species of cyanobacteria that act as the photobiont in lichen associations, including some members of the genera Calothrix, Gloeocapsa, and Nostoc.
